Aug 5 Outbreak

I planned on dropping in this afternoon for an update on all the large incidents, but then storms rolled through, and I've been caught up watching an outbreak of new fires– so here's a quick update on that.

58 New Fires (and counting)...

There have been 58 new fires in Idaho since noon today and more are coming in every time I look. These fires are all caused by dry lightning from afternoon storms. Many of these fires are still unstaffed, and some don't even have names yet. I'm adding the current breakdown of fires as of 8 PM Mountain time. Please note that by the time I post this, the count will be higher. I'm also showing fires that are more than 50 acres in the list, but numerous fires haven't had an Initial Attack "size-up" yet, and thus, no current estimate is available.

The initial attack has been insanely heavy in Idaho and Eastern Oregon, with air resources from several states assisting. However, it'll be well into tomorrow before we have a full accounting of the fire starts from today—we'll have another batch of fires popping smoke tomorrow and a few more the next day, and... yeah, we'll be seeing holdovers from today's lightning for several days.

Jump Fire

The most notable fire (so far) is the 12,000-acre Jump fire burning in Jump Creek near HWY 95 southwest of Marsing.

Jump Fire location. This is not an official or even my estimated perimeter -- it's just a representative area.
